Ignite Ole Miss: Memorial Fund Campaign Launches for Pamela E. Hamilton

Dear Friends and Family,

In August 2015, my dear friend, Pamela Hamilton, died from complications of lupus. Pam was well known in the Ole Miss community for her work as a student writer and subsequent editor of The Daily Mississippian in 2000-2001. During her tenure as editor, Pam made a great impact on campus and in the greater Oxford community. She opened the paper’s ranks to student writers from across campus and encouraged the free exchange and reporting of ideas from all groups. Pam was a quiet, gentle spirit but her writing was bold and fearless; she used her position to bring people together, promote social justice and change the world around her. It was always amazing to read her work.

During her time at Ole Miss, Pam completed an internship at The New York Times. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, she began her professional career at the Associated Press. Later, she moved to North Carolina to pursue a master’s degree in English at the University of North Carolina. While there, she was diagnosed with lupus but she persevered, eventually completing her studies and earning her master’s degree.

Since her passing, I have thought a lot about what Pam would have been able to accomplish if her life had not ended so soon. I know in my heart the sky was the limit for her and she would have made an even bigger impact on the world through her work. Now that she’s gone, Pam’s family and I want to make sure her impact continues to be felt at the University of Mississippi and beyond.

Please join us in ensuring Pam’s memory lives on by making a tax-deductible donation to the Pamela E. Hamilton Memorial Fund. Pam’s endowment will be used to support students from the University of Mississippi whose work personifies the use of journalism in social justice. Our goal is to raise $35,000 – at this level the fund will be able to support an annual lecture on social justice and media as well as an annual scholarship to a student in the Meek School of Journalism and New Media.
