The Shelter on Van Buren is scheduled as one of the stops on YAC’s first Oxford Art Crawl of 2016

Earlier this month, HottyToddy.com posted and featured YAC’s upcoming Oxford Art Crawl event on Tuesday, January 26; its first of 2016. Since that time, we’ve come across some great updates and additions that will surely round out the evening in a positive way.

The popular event – held religiously on the fourth Tuesday of each month (January through October) – is sponsored by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC) and is always free of charge and open to everyone.

With a pre-crawl gathering planned from 5-6 p.m. at The Orchard church on Highway 7 in its Northlight Gallery; the night promises to be jam-packed with festive art and active locals joining in on the eclectic fun. The pre-crawl event at The Orchard is being labeled Fiber-izing: Local Fiber Artists which gives an obvious nod to the upcoming Fiber Arts Festival to be held at the Powerhouse and Knit1 Oxford beginning January 28.

The crawl – scheduled from 6-8 p.m. – will launch from the Powerhouse in Oxford’s iconic Double Decker bus.

Planned stops along the way are: University of Mississippi Museum which will feature fiber artist Kate Freeman Clark; the Powerhouse Community Arts Center which will feature the entire Piecemakers Quilt Exhibit; Southside Gallery; and High Point Coffee who will be featuring artist Claire Whitehurst.

In addition and arguably the most interesting stop along the way (at least in my eyes) will be the brand-spanking new Shelter on Van Buren, which has its walls adorned with great Oxford Film Festival art and posters from the past along with other eclectic paintings and photographs. This is par for the course for the coffee/smoothie shop/music venue owner Ron Shapiro. Historically, Shapiro and his staff have proven to be great supporters of local film and art and most certainly will add a touch of local class to YAC’s first art crawl of 2016.

Parking for the event is free to participants and is available in the lot located behind the Powerhouse. From there, the Double Decker bus will shuttle participants regularly throughout evening; making stops at the UM Museum, the Oxford Square, the Ole Miss campus and at the Powerhouse itself; as well as the other stops listed above. With the regularity of the bus, participants can easily visit each of the locations and enjoy all of the art on display.

Through its website, YAC encourages the entire L-O-U community: “Join us the fourth Tuesday of each month for a monthly tour of Oxford’s art spaces – everything from the traditional to one night only pop up shows.”

Other crawls planned for 2016 include: February 23; March 22; April 26; May 24; June 28; July 26; August 23; September 27 and October 25.

The Oxford Art Crawl is presented each month with the generous support of Visit Oxford; the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council; Southside Gallery; the University of Mississippi Museum; Gallery 130; and the University of Mississippi Department of Art.
