Oxford Businessman Jay Hughes Sworn in as 12th District Representative

Retired judge Henry Lackey did the honors, swearing in Jay Hughes as 12th District Representative Thursday, describing the Oxford businessman and alderman as “unique, interesting and different.”
The ceremony was held before a packed house of friends, relatives and supporters in the historic courtroom in the Lafayette County Court House. In a good humored introduction, Judge Lackey described Hughes as “unique, interesting and different” while endorsing Hughes as a leader who reflects hard work and commitment.
The event was festive and informal, marked by a little good humored give-and-take between Hughes and Judge Lackey, his friend, and mentor. The ceremony, however, solemnized the important role Hughes will play as the new Democrat Representative in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

“I am honored to be sworn in by Judge Lackey who is a man of great integrity, ” Hughes said, adding his service as a State Representative will reflect the values “integrity and honor” demonstrated in the life and career of his mentor, Judge Lackey.
“I never forget that I come from a proud but struggling background where I learned about character and hard work – out of necessity. My many jobs include experience as a janitor, truck driver, carpenter’s helper, soldier, night guard, cook, waiter and literally everything in between,” Hughes said, adding that along the way he has “experienced the pride of promotion, or frustration of being fired, or hurt of being laid off.”
“The people that do each of these jobs are the glue of our communities, the ones who make it possible for the wheels to run smoothly. I pledge to remember them and their children with every single vote I consider in Jackson,” he said.
Hughes, in brief remarks made before a swearing in celebration held at a local restaurant, said he was “humbled, honored and eager” as he assumes his post in the 2016 Mississippi Legislature.
“I appreciate each of you for trusting me with your vote and to represent you,” he said.
