Dolly Parton’s ‘Coat of Many Colors’ to Rebroadcast Christmas Night on NBC

Due to the amazing and not entirely unexpected popularity of Dolly Parton’s and producer Sam Haskell’s Coat of Many Colors on NBC on December 10, the network has made a decision to rebroadcast the film on Christmas night (Friday, December 25) at 7 p.m. central time.

The movie, which dominated viewership across the US in almost all age categories on December 10, has been critically lauded and the staggering statistics tell the story.
According to Tony Maglio, author of TheWrap: “With three-day delayed viewing numbers in, NBC’s Dolly Parton‘s ‘Coat of Many Colors’ made-for-TV movie is now most-watched in 6 years. The film was already a big hit ‘live’ — and it’s now set a record for delayed viewing. The movie’s 2.548 million additional total viewers in three-day delayed viewing is the biggest lift ever for a broadcast movie. It originally scored 13 million total viewers, per Nielsen’s Live + Same Day ratings, so per L + 3 Day numbers, “Coat” has now eclipsed 15.5 million total audience membesr. Now, ‘Coat of Many Colors’ is the most-watched broadcast TV movie in more than six years. ‘Coat’ also rose 27 percent in the key 18-49 demographic, reaching a 2.34 from a 1.84. That is the highest rating for a broadcast movie in nearly five years — a span covering 158 entrants.

In an early-December interview with Haskell, he offered this summary – a “CliffNotes-type” version of the inspirational film: “Faith, hope, family, forgiveness, love – that’s what Coat of Many Colors is about. But, there are other really import messages in this movie other than that; like anti-bullying which was just as prevalent in the ‘50s as it is today and it can be cruel.”
The buzz on the street is that not only do viewers want to re-visit the film on Christmas night; many of their recorders will be set for future viewing. In light of the major programming shuffle in Friday night’s schedule, NBC apparently is more than happy to accommodate.

Along with others in the complex cast, newcomer Alyn Lind portrays the nine-year-old Dolly Parton in the film, with Jennifer Nettles playing the part of Parton’s mother and Ricky Schroder tackling the intense portrayal of her father. Ole Miss alum and Haskell’s close friend of 30 years, Gerald McRaney, plays her grandfather; and Haskell’s daughter, Mary Lane Haskell, plays the part of Miss Moody, an influential grade school teacher of Parton’s who taught a one-room schoolhouse in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains.

I pushed everyone so hard to give the best that they had to this project and they did!”
“I have compared Coat of Many Colors to the classic children’s story Stone Soup where an entire town, hungry during the Revolutionary War, gave the best they had to the pot of soup being cooked in the center of town. As a result, they cooked a massive pot of delicious soup and were able to feed the entire town.”

My Sweet Dad has gone home to be with his Father, but for 7 years we came up to Pigeon Forge and went to Dolly Wood, One of his favorite’s and he enjoyed watching the homeade craft’s. Then he would want to go and get him a sandwich and sit and Watch the Birds of Prey………. Thank You and Your family for Blessing his Heart………

I was especially touched by this movie. My mom just passed into glory this past October 19. I want to thank NBC for showing this again. It moved me to “strong tears” knowing that I won’t be able spend any more Christmases here on earth with her. I am grateful she too trusted in Jesus as her Savior and we will have an eternity to spend together after my time on earth is done. What a wonderful testimony displayed by Dolly’s mom in telling her husband that We don’t have to “spend eternity alone.”

Thank You. We need more TV shows like this. It reminded me of growing up in the country in the 1940s. A wonderful tribute to what life is all about..FAITH . An NBC series of this nature would be so refreshing.

I’m so thankful to see a nice family movie like this. Aunts, Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephew gathered at Grandma and Grandpa’s house this Christmas night to watch it together. There isn’t much like this on tv anymore that the family can share.

I would love to watch the movie but the girl Alyvia who plays Dolly as a child drives me nuts. She plays on young and restless. I do not like her acting. She has a winney voice and her facial expressions are not convincing.

I didn’t know anything about this movie and really not a lot about Dolly. Tonight, Christmas night my wonderful wife found this show on and convinced me to sit down and watch it. You will never know what a blessing this movie was to me and my family. I am so thankful for you all and the gift you have given. Please share my THANKS to all involved: The story was…it’s hard to describe: such a perfect reflection of what life is, how difficult and what life is really about: Jesus!

Did not know who Dolly Parton was. We were flying back tonight from Tennessee after a week long family reunion in the smokey mountains. Stayed at the Dollywood cabins and got to know more about Dolly Parton over the week. On our flight back I saw this movie on the plane today! What a coincidence!!

The movie is available on Hulu. Last time I found it on Hulu it was under “Episodes” not “movies”. We signed up with Hulu just to be able to watch it! … they offer a free trial for a week. We ended up keeping Hulu, haha 🙂
The movie is a blessing, a classic in the making! It shows me our country is so hungry for good, warm-hearted, pure, Christian entertainment!

I truly enjoyed this movie. I had to get the kleenex out a few times. I wish there were more faith based family movies on NBC CBS and ABC networks instead of all the filth and violance. Way to go Dolly, Mr Haskell and NBC.

The movie was just as good the second time as the first. The big red headed boy Rudy sanders played an outstanding bully and I hope his character will help others overcome the bullies in their lives
