Nkemdiche Bowl Status Unknown, Bowl Prep Begins Today
Hugh Freeze, head football coach for the Ole Miss Rebels, held a press conference today. Among topics was NFL draft cards and the bowl status of Robert Nkemdiche, who was injured this weekend after falling several feet from a building.
In opening statements, Freeze said he was excited for the Sugar Bowl.
“It’s a dream of mine to play in the Sugar Bowl,” Freeze said. “We’re starting bowl prep today. I’m very impressed with what Coach Gundy is doing. Putting up 43 points and 500 yards.”
Rumors have been circulating about which football players will be drafted by the NFL in 2016. Freeze said Ole Miss can only send five draft cards to see if players are eligible. So far, Freeze sent cards for Fadol Brown and Evan Engram. The deadline for NFL draft cards is Jan. 4.
Other discussions in the conference turned to the eligibility of Robert Nkemdiche for the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. Although, the Atlanta Police Department charged Nkemdiche with possession of marijuana and he occurred multiple stitches, Freeze is still uncertain about his bowl status.
Freeze said he talked to Robert last night in a short conversation. Nkemdiche told Freeze that he is “ok.” The Ole Miss DT will be returning to the Ole Miss campus today, and Coach Freeze said he plans to have a longer discussion with him. Freeze and his coaching staff are still learning and gathering information about Nkemdiche’s injury.
The Rebels will take on Oklahoma State on Jan. 1, 2016, at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Rebels will be the home team for the bowl game, and they will be practicing in the superdome soon.
