New York Times Lists UM’s Bruce Levingston’s Album Among Best Classical Musical Recordings
The New York Times‘ classical music team chose 25 CDs as the best classical music recordings of 2015. The Chancellor’s Sally McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College Artist-in-Residence, Bruce Levingston’s Heavy Sleep made the international list.
The New York Times‘ Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim said, “Tender, sparse and painfully private, this exquisite disc links a series of preludes, fugues and fantasies by Bach (arranged by Max Reger, Alexander Siloti and Gyorgy Kurtag) and two meditative contemporary works, “Heavy Sleep” by Timo Andres and “El Male Rachamim,” by Mohammed Fairouz, in a solo recital that shimmers with Mr. Levingston’s mastery of color and nuance.”
Hailing from Cleveland, Mississippi, Bruce Levingston is a celebrated concert pianist who has spent the past year working with UM students on honing their musical talents. Heavy Sleep, his fifth album, features work relating “directly or spiritually to the theme of death, rebirth, or both,” according to Sono Luminus’ description of the album.
