Hunters’ Hollow Reports Gun Sales Are Exploding, Predicting Demand Will Soon Outstrip Supply
A major gun seller in Oxford says gun sales are skyrocketing and the demand may outstrip supply next year.
Donny Guest, owner of Hunters’ Hollow, one of the north Mississippi region’s largest outdoor supply stores, said the sales of both long guns and handguns are increasing and that the manufacturers “are already backed up with orders.”
“We virtually sold out of weapons right after the current administration was elected for a second term. I think the same thing is about to happen, we may be out of supplies early next year,” Guest said. “People are scared. They don’t feel like we are being protected like we should be.”
Guest just returned from a clothing trade show, and he noticed “all the talk” was not about clothing but rather about the “exploding gun sales.”
“Gun suppliers told us they are backed up, and to not even try to place orders right now. We got online and purchased everything we could find,” Guest said.
Guest sees that the Americans are afraid: “The perception is a lack of leadership. We don’t feel safe. There is an uncertainty about the economy. There is a feeling that these incidents we are seeing in Paris and recently California are coming to our door and we have to be prepared to protect our families and ourselves.”
Oxford Police Chief Joey East said the city recently ordered crowd control shields and helmets. He feels Oxford is “as equipped and prepared as much as we can be” for an event.
According to Chief East, the patrol cars are already equipped with assault rifles and other long guns.
Guest believes the only way citizens can protect themselves is “they will have to be prepared. We are going to have to stand up and fight
back. We need to be armed and learn to use weapons safely and be prepared,” Guest said.
Chief East said that citizens arming themselves is a personal choice.
“That, I don’t recommend, but if you do purchase arms, make sure you are well-trained not only in the safe and appropriate use of a weapon, but in determining a target of threat,” Chief East said.
Guest said Hunters’ Hollow has a “mile-long list” of people who want to enroll in gun-training courses. He expects to add two new trainers early next year and expand classes to meet the demand.
Hunters’ Hollow has a state-of-the-arts gun range with 10 indoor firing lanes.
“People of all age groups are taking classes but the largest number generally are middle aged married people and older people.” Guest said, “But we also have young women, who perhaps live alone, arming themselves and learning how to safely use a weapon.”
Guest said 75 percent of his sales are handguns due to the state laws allowing certified individuals to carry weapons, and with additional certification, carry concealed weapon.
Hunters’ Hollow sells a large numbers of assault rifles which Guest calls “modern sporting rifles.” Although Guest says they look like military weapons, more hunters are using “these modern weapons because they can shoot further, flatter and sometimes have larger magazine capacity.”
“We have been seeing this increase in gun sales for sometime but each time there is an event, sales go up,” Guest said.
“I don’t think we have seen anything like the sales we are about to have. I really think sales are going to go out of sight. By the end of next year you may not be able to buy a gun, “ he said.
When asked if he thinks college towns are more at risk that other communities, Guest said he felt this is the case “because we have so many gun-free zones, events such as ball games and anywhere there large crowds, that make for easy targets.”
