As fans are buying their tickets, booking their hotels and planning their routes to New Orleans, Louisiana for the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl, we want to reminisce and throw it back (#tbt) to the 1970 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

A New Decade of Football

It was a new decade of fashion, hair, music and football. Disco was alive and so was the Ole Miss football team under head coach, Johnny Vaught.

With an attendance of about 80,000 people at the Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, the Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in a 27-22 victory. Tickets were only $7 and the stadium was loud.

1970 Sugar Bowl Pre-game

The pre-game started with the university bands, including the UM band, playing and preforming on the Sugar Bowl field. James Ferguson was the band director for the UM band. In New Orleans fashion, the New Orleans Jazz band joined the UM band in a melody before the game officially started.

As the bands play, Vaught and Arkansas Razorback head coach, Frank Royals, stood on the field talking and smiling in their dress suites and neck ties before coaching against each other.

Amongst Vaught and Royals, the Ole Miss Chancellor, Porter Fortune, Jr., and Arkansas President, David Mullins, were on the sidelines enjoying the pre-game celebrations.

Crowning of the Queen, Prayer and National Anthem

With excited fans from Mississippi and Arkansas, it was time to crown the queen. Miss. Della Roberts of Louisiana was escorted on field and crowned queen of the 1970 Sugar Bowl. Adoring fans clapped and cheered as she waved and accepted her new title.

Next, it was time for the prayer and national anthem. Everyone in the stadium stood with their heads bowed as a prayer for peace was prayed over them. Afterwards, the United States national anthem was sung followed by the crowd cheering for the game to start.

First Touchdown and Victory

As the first quarter started, Archie Manning, the Ole Miss quarterback, had an explosive game and the Ole Miss Rebels made the first touchdown of the game.

Upon 4 quarters interceptions, fouls and just plain exciting football, the Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks. Dr. Fred J. Wolf, Jr., met Coach Vaught on the field to give him the championship trophy. Nearby, Archie Manning, receives the trophy for the Miller-Digby Award for the most outstanding player in the game.

2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl

Fast forward forty-six years and the Ole Miss Rebels are returning back to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. This time they are under the leadership of Coach Hugh Freeze, who has proved himself to be one of the best recruiting coaches for Ole Miss.

Ticket prices have jumped from $7 to the cheapest ticket being about $150. Nonetheless, it will be priceless to see the Rebels play in the Sugar Bowl again.

The Rebels will take on Oklahoma State on Jan. 1, 2016, in the Mercedes Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
