The Mockingbird Early Music Ensemble will preform at the Paris Yates Chapel on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.
Connections to Ole Miss
The ensemble is in its twelfth season of preforming. Founded in 2003, the four musicians that make up the ensemble were inspired by historical presentations of music before 1750. All the musicians are connected with the University of Mississippi.
“Three out of four of us teach (or taught) at the University,” Susan Marchant, a member of the ensemble said.
Irene Kaufmann is an alumna of Ole Miss and currently teaches Spanish classes, Susan Marchant is retired from the Croft Institute, Warren Steel is a retired professor of music and Ronald Vernon is a retired associate Dean of Liberal Arts and professor music.
“We have a series that we do,” Marchant said. “Usualy a Fall, Winter and Spring (concert).”
What to Expect
This year, the December concert is entitled “Dreaming of Winters” past. According to Marchant, they will play seasonal music from the medieval times to the baroque. The instruments used will be a vielles, viola da gamba, psaltery, recorders, harpsichord and an organ.
“A wide-ranging selection of familiar tradition tunes and some that will be new to you,” the ensemble said in reference to what tunes you should expect.
This year, the concert will feature tenor singer, Jos Milton, as a special guest. Milton is a professional singer and an educator. He is an assistant professor of music at the University, too. Join the Mockingbird Early Ensemble this Sunday to enjoy the sounds of “Dreaming of Winters Past.”
