Board of Aldermen Agenda For Meeting Tonight

There is a Board of Aldermen meeting set for this evening in Oxford at the city hall. There will be a special meeting at 4 p.m. and the regular meeting will start at 5 p.m.

The special meeting is for the aldermen to discuss future annexations of the areas around the perimeter of Oxford. This talk began about a month ago during an aldermen work session. Mike Slaughter, the expert of the annexations, will address the board about the areas, time frames and the costs of these annexations to the city during the 4 p.m. meeting.

“We are not starting anything. We are bringing in the expert so he can explain to us the process, the information he needs, what areas are proper for annexation and a time frame and financial commitment of the city,” Jay Hughes, Alderman of Ward 1, said. “They (the annexation areas discussed at the working session) were in the West Oxford Loop area and then we had two other areas of future potential.”

After the special meeting, the regular 5 p.m. meeting will resume. There are four items on the agenda tonight.

Re-zoning

Item 9 brings up the re-zoning of the corner of South Lamar and Belk Boulevard. Hughes said the land that needs to be rezoned is about an acre in size. The new zoning will be make the land be available for neighborhood businesses, such as the new Chancellor hotel coming soon.

Jake Brake/Engine Brake

Item 10 will be the first reading of a new ordinance that will prohibit large trucks from using engine brakes inside of Oxford city limits will be tonight. There will be a public hearing of the proposed ordinance at the next aldermen meeting. The final reading of the ordinance will be on January 5, 2016. If it passes, the new ordinance will go into affect 30 days after the final reading.

Commercial Recycling:

Item 13 will be the reading of a proposed change to allow businesses, or commercial locations, to recycle. Until now, recycling has been limited to residents.

Metro Narcotics Task Force

Item 18 will be the request and approval to hire a new commander of the Metro Narcotics Task Force. Rod Waller, a 32 year veteran of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and the D.E.A., is the recommended person for hire.
