MassageXcellence, owned by Kristal Woodruff, offers treatments in Oxford for those with diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that impairs carbohydrate metabolism from an inadequate production of insulin. The insulin hormone is what the body uses to convert food into energy. There are medications available to control and treat diabetic patients. In addition to adverse effects, drug treatments are not always satisfactory and many have side effects or complications.

Along with eating a healthy diet and monitoring the blood sugar, a massage could help people with diabetes.

Massage can be a beneficial, complementary therapy and diabetics can find the results very helpful. It increases circulation and circulation is often impaired in diabetics due to the damaging effects of elevated blood sugar levels. With improved circulation the cells insulin uptake improves, too.

Massage can be also a great means of relaxation. Relaxation releases endorphins and calms the nervous system resulting in a reduction of stress hormones.

Several studies have shown that individuals who received a massage had greater physical and emotional comfort after the session.

Mobility is another thing that some diabetics battle. A good massage can increase mobility. High blood sugar thickens connective tissue, which decreases mobility and elasticity. A massage helps to relieve stiffness and increase a range of motion, reducing the thickening effect of uncontrolled glucose levels.

For those wanting to seek a massage as an alternative therapy, make sure the physician is aware and also inform the skilled massage therapist of this condition. Make sure to choose a massage therapist that has experience with diseases and who is familiar with the pathology associated with diabetes and its complications.

Types of Diabetes

Type one diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, roughly affects 10-15 percent of the total number of diabetics. For these people, there is little or no insulin being produced. Often times this type occurs after major physical or emotional stress. Unfortunately, Type one diabetes usually presents itself in childhood or adolescence.

Type two diabetes, or non-insulin dependent diabetes, affects more than 85 percent of the total number of diabetics. For these individuals, the pancreas produces insulin, but the cells in the body that use insulin develop a resistance to it. Type two diabetes progresses more slowly than type one and is more common in older individuals.

For those with diabetes or know people who have this know the importance being aware of the types of diabetes and the things that help improve it. MassageXcellence is open seven days a week by appointment and provides extended hours for convenience.
