Ole Miss Host Northwestern State to Open 2015-16 Basketball Season
Ole Miss’s men’s basketball regular season tips-off Friday afternoon as the Rebels host Northwestern State inside of Tad Smith Coliseum at 4 p.m. on SEC Network+.
Ole Miss returns three starters from last year’s squad (Stefan Moody – 33, Sebastian Saiz – 32, and Martavious Newby – 27) that started a combined 92 games last season and led Ole Miss to its second NCAA Tournament berth in three seasons.
The Rebels also return to the court with last year’s top two leading rebounders on the team in Sebastian Saiz (5.5 per game) and Martavious Newby (5.4 per game).
Senior guard Stefan Moody earned preseason All-SEC first team honors from the league coaches’ media after leading the SEC in scoring at conference games with 18.6 ppg last year. Moody also led the league in steals averaging 2.0 per game.
The Northwestern State Demons return four starters off last year’s 19-13 squad including the nation’s leading scorer in Zeek Woodley (22.2 ppg), who paired with Jalen West (20.0 ppg). Both forms the highest returning scoring backcourt in the nation. Northwestern State was predicited to finish second in the Southland preseason coaches’ poll behind three-time league champion Stephen F. Austin.
Ole Miss and Northwestern State are facing off against each other for the third time on the hardwood. The Rebels have won both of the prior two meetings with the last game Ole Miss won 99-52 in 1997.
