Ole Miss’ Kelly, Haynes Nab SEC Weekly Honors
After helping Ole Miss to a 27-19 road win at Auburn, Ole Miss’ Chad Kelly and Marquis Haynes have earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference office.
Kelly has been tabbed SEC Offensive Player of the Week while Haynes is the league’s Defensive Lineman of the Week for the second straight time.
A junior quarterback from Buffalo, New York, Kelly topped 400 yards of total offense and tossed two big second-half touchdowns to lead Ole Miss to victory on the Plains. He completed 33 of 51 passes for 381 yards with two TDs and rushed eight times for 21 yards. He broke a tied game with a 45-yard TD toss to Derrick Jones in the third quarter and threw a beautiful 21-yard scoring strike to Laquon Treadwell in the fourth quarter with the Rebels clinging to a one-point lead.
Kelly extended his single-season school record with his sixth 300-yard passing game and sits third on the career chart behind Bo Wallace (11) and Eli Manning (10). He leads the SEC in total offense (335.3 ypg) and passing average (317.3 ypg) this season.
Haynes, a sophomore defensive end, put together his second consecutive monster performance to stifle another SEC West offensive attack. The Jacksonville, Florida, native posted 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks against Auburn. He led the team with six solo stops and added a QB pressure.
In the last two games against Texas A&M and Auburn, Haynes has recorded a whopping 6.0 TFLs and 4.0 sacks. His 5.0 sacks in SEC play equals the most in the league, while he’s second to Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett with 7.5 in all games.
Haynes moved into a tie for sixth on the Ole Miss career sacks list with 15.0 in just under two seasons.
