Mayo, Hughes Campaign to Represent District 12 in Mississippi House

There are five days left in the race to represent District 12 in the Mississippi House of Representatives for both incumbent Brad Mayo and challenger Jay Hughes, Ward 1 Alderman of Oxford.

The election day is November 3.

Jay Hughes is Ward 1 Alderman serving the city of Oxford, an attorney of Hughes Brown, PLLC and a long-time Oxonian. He is the Democratic candidate for House District 12.

In the letter he sent to HottyToddy.com, he said, “This decision to run is not part of some grand plan – rather it is a call to action. I believe in being an American first, then Mississippian, then Oxonian, then a good and caring person for education and my neighbors. Party does not play a role in it for me. I believe that the name in front of the letter on a ballot is far more important to me than the letter behind the name. Unfortunately, partisan politics and PAC money has, in my opinion, meant that we, the people, are the last ones being served in Jackson.”

Hughes’ campaign slogan is “It all starts with education!” If there were any issues Hughes addressed during his campaign, education would be it.

Alderman Robyn Tannehill released a letter endorsing Jay Hughes. In the letter (viewable on Jay For District 12 Facebook), Tannehill wrote that Hughes “walks the walk.”

She said, “Jay Hughes also puts his money where his mouth is. I got to know Jay when he was leading the charge to place Smartboards in every classroom of our public schools. Jay, and his wife Cris, are true public servants. Their financial contributions and hard work made the project a reality. Jay also donated wireless internet to the downtown Square area in Oxford so that students can use their laptops and businesses can have this convenience. Both of these generous contributions to Oxford were done years before Jay was even involved in politics! Currently, Jay Hughes donates his entire alderman salary to the Oxford Public School endowment. Like I said, he puts his money where his mouth is.”

Brad Mayo is the Republican incumbent. He is a native Oxonian as a graduate of Oxford High School and the University of Mississippi. He owns a financial and independent advising firm and a former Ward VI Alderman for Oxford. He was one of the two aldermen involved with the project team that helped bring Winchester to Lafayette County. He also worked with the mayor and the aldermen in developing the city’s Rainy Day and Trust Fund.

As the Representative of District 12, Mayo serves on the Education committee as well as Fees and Salaries of Public Officials, Insurance, Medicaid, Public Health and Human Services, Universities & Colleges, and Ways & Means committees.

Mayo has received a number of endorsements. Tonight they will meet in a debate hosted by the Oxford Eagle at the Oxford Conference Center at 6 p.m.
