No. 25 Florida defeats No. 3 Ole Miss inside the Swamp, 38-10

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze was trying to figure out the exact words to say after his team was pushed and shoved around on both ends of the football from start to finish. Before Freeze uttered a complete sentence, his facial expression said it all about the third-ranked Rebels’ performance against the streaking 25th-ranked Florida Gators.

Coach Freeze: “It was a difficult night”

“It was a difficult night. They beat us in about every facet of the game that you can imagine,” Freeze said following Ole Miss’ 38-10 loss to Florida in front of 90,585 fans. “And we didn’t play well with the intensity you need to play in an environment like this early on.”

For the first two quarters, it was the Gators (5-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) who played with high intensity on both sides of the football. Throwing the first punch and playing with a lot of fire had always been the Rebels’ signature move, but on Saturdaynight in Gainesville it was the Gators who scored on their first two drives with touchdowns passes from redshirt freshman Will Grier to Demarcus Robinson and Jake McGee.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Gators were up 25-3 and ended any hopes of an Ole Miss comeback with two field goals (31 and 22 yards) from redshirt freshman kicker Jorge Powell and a one-yard touchdown run from Jordan Cronkrite.

Ole Miss Women’s Golf

Career Day for Rebels at CSU Fall Invitational

The Ole Miss women’s golf team had a day to remember during the first two rounds of the CSU Fall Invitational at Château Élan Golf Club in Braselton, Ga., on Monday.

The Rebels sit in third place after scoring 291-278—569 on day one of the tournament. The second round 278 is the best 18-hole score in program history and the 569 marks the lowest two-round total in program history.

“We are so proud of the entire team for their perseverance today,” head coach Kory Henkes said. “Setting the all-time school record is amazing and there couldn’t be a more deserving team. They never gave up and that’s what it’s all about.”

Leading the way for Ole Miss was senior Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) who tied Dori Carter and Stani Schiavone’s single round scoring record after firing a 7-under par 65 in the second round. Newton’s two-round 135 Monday is not only her career-best, but is also a school record. The senior fired eight birdies and two eagles on day one and is atop the leaderboard with 18-holes to play.

“Today I just gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities and was able to take advantage of it,” Newton said. “I’m really proud of my team for breaking a record today, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow and seeing what we can do!”

Also having a nice day at the office was junior Madisen Bentley (University Park, Wash.) who fired 74-68—142. The second round 68 is a career-best for the Washington native. Bentley scored par or better on 33 of her 36 holes Monday and sits tied for seventh.

“My ball striking was consistently solid,” Bentley said. “It was just a matter of staying patient and giving myself plenty of birdie opportunities.”

Henkes is proud of the performances from both Newton and Bentley.

“Abby and Madisen are both great putters and if they give themselves opportunities they will make birdies. That is what happened today,” Henkes said. “It was a great day for the Rebels!”

Ole Miss Men’s Golf

Freshman Braden Thornberry fired a 5-under 67 Monday in the second round of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, as Ole Miss jumped up the team leaderboard into fourth place heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Thornberry, the No. 12 recruit of the 2015 class, played the front nine at even-par, before exploding after the turn with four birdies and an eagle at the 7,302-yard Erin Hills Golf Club. That performance would vault him into second place individually, with a total score of 139 through 36 holes, just two shots behind leader Jonathan Garrick, of ULCA. Thornberry also helped the Rebels post a team score of 282, the best score of any team in the second round, and lift them up two spots to fourth place heading into the final round. Ole Miss trails third-place UCLA by two strokes and leader SMU by 10.

“We had a great day as a team,” said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. “We have been close to putting together a round like that for a while now, so it was good to see us finish one off. Braden (Thornberry) really had a great run of holes on the back nine. Noah (West) continues to play solid golf, and it was great to see Beau get a good round under his belt. We need to build on this round and come out aggressive tomorrow.”

Junior Noah West also turned in an under-par round with a 1-under 71 Monday, tallying three birdies, and moved into a tie for ninth place with a two-day score of 142. Freshman Beau Briggs pieced together a solid second round, finishing the day with a 2-under 70. The Covington, Louisiana native’s two-round total of 148 has him in a tie for 27th. Junior Ben Wolcott posted three birdies in the second round, finishing with 2-over 74 and is tied for 36th headed into the final round. Senior Forrest Gamble is tied for 62nd after an 82 in the second round.

With SEC West title hopes still alive, Freeze focuses on Rebels’ next opponent

Coming back from Gainesville, Florida to Oxford, Mississippi over the weekend, Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze had time to digest the Rebels’ 38-10 loss to Florida and reflect back on past seasons when the program was in this exact same predicament.

In the fourth game of its 2013-14 season, Ole Miss was shutout by then top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 25-0, but the Rebels returned the favor the following season, defeating the Crimson Tide 23-17 in Oxford and again this season inside Bryant-Denny Stadium, 43-37.

Freeze: “We need to own the loss”

It doesn’t faze Freeze to see his team in this situation, because he knows they have the ability to climb out of it. At his weekly press conference Monday, Freeze acknowledged his team did not play its best:
