After a close win over Vandy, Kelly and the Rebels set for Gators

Chad Kelly may not have had his best game at quarterback for third-ranked Ole Miss Saturday night against the confident Vanderbilt Commodores, but he delivered when it mattered most and the Rebels defeated Vandy 27-16 at Vaught-Hemingway in Oxford.

Early in the first quarter, Kelly found wide out Damore’ea Stringfellow for the 20-yard touchdown, which gave the Rebels (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) an early 7-3 lead. But his job was far from done. In the fourth quarter, after Vandy cut the Rebels’ lead to 20-16 off Tommy Openshaw’s 34-yard field goal, Ole Miss would look to Kelly to lead the offense on a game-sealing drive.

Kelly and the Rebels come through in the clutch

The junior college transfer from East Mississippi Community College took the Rebels on a pivotal 9-play, 80-yard drive late in the final quarter.

Kelly connected with wide receiver Laquon Treadwell for 15 yards to the Rebels’ 37, then found Markell Pack for a nine-yard catch.

After two big runs by senior running back Jaylen Walton, who rushed for 138 yards on 21 carries, Kelly rushed for 11 yards to Vanderbilt’s 3-yard line to set up Walton’s 3-yard rushing touchdown.

Rebels Win Doubles at UNLV Invite

The Ole Miss women’s tennis team kicked off the fall season this weekend winning the doubles title at the UNLV Invitational and playing for two singles titles as well in Las Vegas and Little Rock, Arkansas.

UNLV Fall Invitational
In Las Vegas, junior Zalina Khairudinova and freshman Allie Sanford teamed up to win the Flight 1 doubles, defeating Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks of Northern Arizona 8-6 in the final. Khairudinova also played for the Flight 2 singles title, but lost a close match to UNLV’s Paola Artiga 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. In the third place match of Flight 1 singles sophomore Natalie Suk defeated Aiwen Zhu of UNLV 7-6, 6-1. Senior Mai El Kamash defeated Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach State 6-1, 6-3 in the consolation final. In the Flight 2 consolation final, Sanford defeated Julie Gerard (LBSU) 6-4, 6-4. In the Flight 1 doubles consolation final, Suk/El Kamash defeated Aiwen Zhu and Cristina Moroi (UNLV) 8-6.

“This early in the season, we need a lot of matches, and that is exactly what we got. I am very excited about what I saw this weekend. Allie and Zalina were able to pick up a title in their very first tournament together. In singles, everybody went 2-1 in a very solid field.”

Country Club of Little Rock Invitational
In Little Rock, sophomore Arianne Hartono made it to the singles final for the second year in a row, but was unable to defend her title form a year ago, dropping a tight 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 match to Vladic Babic of Oklahoma State. Freshman Tea Jandric advanced to the semifinals of the A Draw and before losing a close match to Babic.

“I am very proud of the way the girls competed all weekend. We had some great performances and got some much needed match experience. It was a good way to start the year.”

Next up
Three Rebels will represent Ole Miss in the year’s first major, the Riviera All-American Championships, which takes place Oct. 3-11 in Pacific Palisades, California. Arianne Hartono earned a spot in the qualifying singles tournament, while Mai El Kamash and Natalie Suk will begin play in the prequalifying tournament.  They are also in the doubles qualifying.

Rebels Win Doubles at Cajun Classic

The Ole Miss men’s tennis team wrapped up its first weekend of the fall season with everyone getting plenty of matches in at both tournaments and the Rebels winning the doubles title at the Cajun Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Cajun Classic
It was an all Ole Miss final in the doubles final at the Cajun Classic, with senior Stefan Lindmark teaming up with freshman Filip Kraljevic to top teammates, junior Vinod Gowda and sophomore Grey Hamilton, 6-4, 6-3 Sunday. In singles, Lindmark, ranked No. 44 in the nation, reached the quarterfinals before losing to Georgia’s Paul Oosterbaan. Kraljevic nearly won his first round, falling 6-4 in the third to TCU’s Trevor Johnson. The freshman did pick up a win over ULL senior Jake Wynan in the consolation, 6-4, 7-6(5).

“It was nice to see us finish strong with two teams in the final of the doubles. We also got a lot out of our singles matches this weekend. We saw some good things from all of the guys. This was a perfect warmup tournament for the All-American next week. The tournament provided us with really nice hospitality the entire weekend. We want to thank our housing families Patrick and Lynn Trahan and Missy Theriot for taking great care of our guys. It was a good weekend all around, and we hope to be invited back again next year.”

Georgia Tech Invitational
The rest of the squad headed to Atlanta, Georgia for the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Rebels earned 10 wins there in singles and doubles, including freshman Fabian Fallert reaching the semifinals in his draw, before losing a tight match to UNCW’s Javier Restrepo, 6-3, 7-6(5). He finished 3-1 after beating Middle Tennessee’s Michael Appel 6-2, 6-1 Sunday. Gustav Hansson finished 2-1 as did Zvonimir Babic.

Next up
Ole Miss heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma next weekend for the All-American Championships. Several Rebels will begin competition in the prequalifying tournament.

Kelly eager to repeat success of past Ole Miss quarterbacks
At start of the 2015 college football season, all Chad Kelly had in mind was helping the University of Mississippi win football games.

Kelly knows what’s expected of him and has yet to feel the pressure of repeating the past success of Bo Wallace, despite playing in back-to-back close games against Alabama and Vanderbilt. Instead, Kelly is eager and determined to repeat the success of Wallace, who threw for 3,194 yards and 22 touchdowns and led the Rebels to a 9-4 record last season.

Kelly currently leads the Southeastern Conference in passing yards (1,219).
