Poppa’s Wine and Spirits Strives to be Oxford’s Premiere Liquor Store
Poppa’s Wine and Spirits is a relatively new liquor store located at 2305 West Jackson Avenue, next to Newk’s.
Opening two and a half years ago, the store’s owner, Joyce Everett, grew up in a family who owned restaurants in Mississippi. With this background, she has always been interested in alcohol sales.
“It’s just something that I always wanted to do other than food service, and I thought that it would be a good opportunity in my life to do it,” Everett said.
She named the store after her father, Crawley “Poppa” Hamilton. His caricature can be seen on the window next to the entrance. Everett said that “the feeling of comfort when you walk in the door” is what sets Poppa’s apart from other liquor stores in Oxford. The store is upscale and its décor has a California charm.
She noticed while working with her family then that food is handled with respect and she thought, “Why can’t alcohol be, too?” She then had a vision for a classier liquor store instead of the status quo. She said, “You have these wonderful products, why don’t you have a little respect for it?”
Not only does the store offer a unique style, but it also offers exemplary customer service. “If a customer asks for a certain brand, I will check the state’s website to see if it’s available,” said Everett. Some of the more luxurious liquors can be special ordered.
Nevertheless, Poppa’s offers a broad selection of brands at a variety of prices. “We have everything from A to Z. Price range varies from $5 to the sky is the limit,” said Everett.
Another distinct service Poppa’s offers is the ability to etch customized greetings on any liquor bottle for free. This attribute is a big hit for weddings and business events alike.
