SEC details procedures for Football Medical Observer program

On Wednesday the Southeastern Conference detailed the procedures it will introduce for the new Football Medical Observer program in order to comply with the experimental rule placed in effect by the NCAA for the 2015 season.

The Football Medical Observer program was proposed by the SEC and Big Ten and allows medical observers to monitor games and notify game officials when a player appears to have suffered a head or neck injury.

According to the press release from the SEC, the program will begin with season opening games on September 3. A qualified medical professional will be in attendance and “serve as an independent medical observer for all conference contests and all non-conference contests conducted at a home site (including neutral site facilities where the SEC institution plays an annual game.)”

The conference has contracted with Champion Sports Medicine to administer the Football Medical Observer program.

The starting offensive line appears to settled for Ole Miss

Whoever wins the starting quarterback job in Oxford doesn’t stand much chance of success if the offensive line played like they did in the Peach Bowl against TCU. Fortunately for Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze has his starting unit all figured out with 10 days until kickoff.

Touted freshman Javon Patterson at left guard, junior Robert Conyers at center, Justin Bell at right guard, Fahn Cooper at right tackle and of course Laremy Tunsil at left tackle.

“They’ve just been really, really solid,” Freeze said according to the Clarion Ledger.

The starter at center last season, Ben Still, is also likely to see the field this season.

“Ben’s going to play too,” Freeze said. “It’s kind of 1A, 1B. It’s not that big of a separation between them.”

Bryan Wild’s Predictions 2015

Each year around this time, I take a look in my cloudy crystal ball and make some predictions about the upcoming college-football season. Some years, I’m in the ballpark, and some years, I’m not even on the same planet.

Last year, my fortune-telling was pretty spot on. I said the University of Mississippi would be a playoff team. The Rebels came incredibly close to that mark, but Bo Wallace’s bad throw against Louisiana State University and a very unlucky night for Laquon Treadwell against Auburn University ended any playoff hopes.

My next prediction was that Alcorn State University would win the SWAC championship. The Braves proved me right and took the title. Lastly, I said Delta State University and Millsaps College would make the playoffs. I was right about the Statesmen but wrong about the Majors. So let’s see how clear things are this season. Or was last season a miracle of guesswork?

The Rebels will represent the SEC West in the conference title game.

It’s bound to happen one year. Excluding Texas A&M University, who joined the SEC in 2011, every SEC West team has played in the championship game at some point. That includes Mississippi State University, I’m sure to the chagrin of UM fans.

Laquon Treadwell appreciates the support. Every offered prayer. Every thumbs-up emoticon. But he can’t keep looking back. So, one day, he wipes it all away. The successfulquon Instagram account, where the Ole Miss star receiver had narrated his life story with images and videos, where friends and fans alike had come to offer condolences and encouragement after Treadwell’s 2014 season ended with a nationally televised snap of his left leg late in the fourth quarter against Auburn, goes blank.

Inspiring Leaders: Prewitt and Golson believe the Rebels are in good hands

There is no question Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze is a true leader. With Freeze at the helm, the Ole Miss football program continues to benefit not only from his guidance but also from his ability to teach leadership skills to his players. Rebel fans should have no qualms about the direction of the program, for it is in excellent hands.

As the college football faithful ready themselves for the 2015 season, so Rebel Nation finds itself wondering such things as who will replace Bo Wallace at quarterback; how the secondary will perform after losing two All-Americans; and, whether the offensive line will stay healthy.

Like everyone else, I’ve considered these questions since the conclusion of the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve in Atlanta. However, I have also wondered something equally important.

Why Ole Miss will or won’t return to a New Year’s Six game in 2015

Last year’s 9-4 record marked the most successful season in the Hugh Freeze era at Ole Miss. It concluded with a trip to the Peach Bowl — one of the heralded New Year’s Six games — against TCU.

Those bowl games are a chance for teams to enjoy a prime-time national spotlight and bring tons of pride to their respective programs. Unfortunately for the Rebels, last year’s bowl game is one that they’d like to forget.

An ugly 42-3 loss to the Horned Frogs left Ole Miss with a bad taste in its mouth after what was for the most part a very successful season. But Freeze’s team is still loaded with enough talent to get a chance at redemption this season.

Talent is just one factor. There are many others that will also determine if the Rebels will play in a New Year’s Six bowl game once again.

Marshall Henderson signs camp deal with Kings

The NBA may have just become a lot more interesting–especially for Ole Miss fans. Former Rebels standout Marshall Henderson has signed a training camp deal with the Sacramento Kings, according to Yahoo Sport’s Marc Spears who tweeted the following late Tuesday evening:

Henderson played the previous two seasons in the Middle East, having successful showings in both Qatar and Iraq.

The 6-foot-2 guard ended his career at Ole Miss with a 3-pointer in an SEC-record 66-straight games and is ranked third in Ole Miss history in 3-pointers with 267 from long range. He also finished third in school history in free throw percentage (.857) and sixth in scoring average (19.6 ppt). Henderson holds the SEC record with 138 three-pointers made in a season.
