How to Not Look Like an Ole Miss Freshman

The day that every 18-year-old waits for is finally here. College has arrived, which means initiation into the real world has begun.

For some freshmen, beginning college can be the most liberating experience ever, but for some, college can be a pile of question marks that lead to nowhere. Wherever you land on the spectrum, rest assured, because we have put together the Dos and Don’ts of being a freshman, so that you avoid having a humiliating first week of college. All the best!

1. The Union hangout

The most failsafe way to avoid looking like fresh meat on campus is to kill time while waiting on class at the most popular meeting place on campus, known as the Student Union.

“The Union,” as students affectionately call it, is not only a great place to secretly people stalk, but it is also a fun way to engage with other freshmen who are just as lost as you. If you are not too fond of big crowds, you probably should abandon ship around noon to avoid getting bombarded by lunchtime traffic. The crowd usually clears up around 1 p.m. and the coast becomes clear once again, so no worries!

2. Did we spot a letterman jacket?

To avoid having a target on your back that says, “I am a freshman,” we highly encourage all freshmen to leave the high school paraphernalia at home…(Don’t even touch it). While those days were probably some of the best, there is no need to reminisce when you are attending the best university of all time. Trust us, Ole Miss doesn’t bear the moniker of the “Harvard of the South” for nothing.

3. Nike Shorts and Distressed Tees

If you haven’t noticed already, Ole Miss girls rarely go the extra mile for class unless a presentation or sorority event is underway. With that being said, the unspoken dress code for most girls is nothing more than a comfort colors T-shirt paired with your choice of pattern, Nike shorts (swapped out for Nike leggings during the winter months). In case you were wondering ladies, the Soffee shorts era is so 2005 and you def don’t want to be caught red-handed in those.

4. Riding a bike to class

The real seasoned college kids don’t waste time walking to class like everybody else — they zip across the 5-mile radius campus on a sleek mountain bike. Riding skills are definitely preferable and suggested, since weaving in and out of student pathways is unavoidable.
