Vassallo: Trump vs. Biden

Should Hillary’s campaign fall by the wayside and the 16 Republican challengers fold their tents in the wake of the Trump tsunami, an interesting presidential race could evolve. Here’s how I see it.

The Democrats would quickly turn to Vice President Joe Biden. Attempting to select a running mate that would prove a major obstacle to the GOP securing 270 electoral votes, someone from a state the Republicans would have to carry or a perceived conservative
would make sense.

Three possibilities who come to mind include Mark Warner, Senator from Virginia; Charlie Crist, former Governor of Florida and prior Republican; and retired U.S. Army General Wesley Clark. All would create potential difficulties for the Republicans
getting to 270.

Mitt Romney carried 24 states but obtained only 206 electoral votes. Had he carried the states of Ohio (18); Florida (29); Virginia (13); and Nevada (6), he would be planning his re-election bid now. All four of these states are strong possibilities for Republicans with
Virginia being the most difficult.

Donald Trump has several choices to help him get to the magic number. Ohio Governor John Kasich and Florida Senator Mark Rubio are the two that make the most sense. There is no scenario that gives the Republicans a victory without Florida and Ohio. George W. would
have never been President without the help of “hanging chad” Florida.

The United States has become basically a Republican south and west party while the Democrats control the Northeast , parts of the Midwest coupled with California and Hawaii.

We truly are a divided nation when it comes to politics. Trump could possibly pull an unexpected state or two from the Northeast with his NYC roots. This would even be more probable should the stock market/economy nosedive in the process. Should this occur, the Democrats would face an uphill hurdle unseen since George W. ran for re-election.

In any event, it’s not going to be dull. We have some unusual personalities in some unusual times. As someone once said upon a time, “you can’t make this stuff up.”
