One of the great things about living in a college town is that we enjoy all the pluses of living in a small town while benefiting from the trickle-down effect of the arts from larger cities. This Thursday, February 28, at Fulton Chapel at Ole Miss, the trickling continues when Urinetown: The Musical brings a steady stream of Broadway entertainment to town. Performances are February 28 through March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and March 3 at 2 p.m.

Quoth The New York Times: “When every individual spirit as well as the national one can use all the bolstering it can get, Urinetown is not just a recommended tonic.”

The satirical comedy musical features music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis. Its targets include the capitalism, the legal system, social irresponsibility, bureaucracy, corporations, and municipal politics. The characters of Bobby Strong and Hope Cladwell were both included on New York Theatre Monthly‘s list of “The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre.”

Here’s the plot nutshell: Urinetown residents must use pay toilets operated by the Urine Good Company after the municipality outlaws the use of private toilets.

This inventive show creates a strong urge to go. I can barely hold it.
