Cochran Co-sponsors Legislation to Defund Planned Parenthood
U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), a long-time pro-life advocate, today highlighted his support of legislation to prevent taxpayer dollars from funding Planned Parenthood Federation of America in light of video footage implicating the organization in the trafficking of organs from unborn babies.
The legislation, sponsored by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), would prohibit Planned Parenthood Federation of America or any of its affiliate organizations from receiving federal funding. The bill, S.1881, is expected to be considered by the full Senate during the first week of August.
“The Planned Parenthood videos are deeply disturbing in their callousness toward women and infants, and in their disregard for the sanctity of human life,” Cochran said. “There are other more responsible organizations that can better use taxpayer resources help women and children.”
While the Ernst bill would end federal funding for Planned Parenthood and its affiliate organizations, it would continue federal funding for many women’s health services, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, diagnostic laboratory and radiology services, prenatal and postnatal care, and immunizations. 44 Senators have signed on to the measure.
Cochran is a long-standing supporter of pro-life legislation restricting federal funds for abortions and late-term abortions, including the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015 and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
Earlier this month, Cochran joined with 49 Senators in asking the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate Planned Parenthood.
