When John B. Stroud ended his college basketball career at Ole Miss in 1980 he was the No. 2 all-time leading South- eastern Conference scorer, behind only Pistol Pete Maravich. He was a three-time All-SEC performer, chosen SEC Athlete of the Year in 1980.
Stroud led the SEC in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons. He ended his career with 2,328 points. He scored in double figures in 61 consecutive games for Ole Miss. All that came after a four-year high school career at West Union High in New Albany during which he made both All-State and All-America teams. He played three years of professional basketball before going into coaching.
He has coached championship teams at the high school, junior college and college levels. Stroud still holds the scoring record at Mississippi State’s Humphrey Coliseum, having scored 42 points in an Ole Miss-State game.
