Newton and Schiavone Named WGCA All-America Scholars
Rising senior Abby Newton and graduated senior Stani Schiavone both earned Women’s Collegiate Golf All-America Scholar honors it was recently announced. It’s the second consecutive season for both players to earn the prestigious honor.
The Ole Miss golfers were among 760 total student-athletes recognized across women’s golfers in Divisions I, II and III. With some of the most stringent academic guidelines in college athletics, each member of the team has a minimum 3.50 grade point average.
The women’s golf team has a history of academic excellence and both Newton and Schiavone have demonstrated this in the classroom. Schiavone concluded her career with a 4.0 GPA and was a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District selection as a senior. The WGCA’s Kim Moore Spirit award winner, Schiavone was a Taylor Medalist – the highest academic honor bestowed at Ole Miss – and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. Newton, who is a two-time SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll recipient, has also been on the Chancellor’s and Dean’s honor roll during her career.
As team, the Ole Miss golfers consistently perform well in the classroom and have earned the Chancellor’s Cup, awarded to the men and women’s varsity teams with the highest cumulative grade point average among all sports at Ole Miss. This spring, the Rebels had six golfers named to the SEC Spring Academic honor roll.
