In one of those grind it out kinds of games, the Ole Miss Rebels completed the sweep over the Rhode Island Rams on Sunday, by a score of 5-3 .

No. 8 Ole Miss (7-0)  got the bottom of the first inning started off sending six players to the plate and scoring three runs on three hits.  Junior Austin Anderson hit a single to right field,  sophomore Auston Bousfield hit a single past the second baseman sending Anderson to third, then junior Stuart Turner hit a sacrifice fly RBI to center which allowed Anderson to cross the plate.

The big hit in the inning came from junior Will Allen who hit his first home run of the season.  The home run was a two-run shot to left field into the Ole Miss bullpen.

“I got the green light from Coach  Godwin.  I was hesitant to swing but I stepped in the box and I just took a hack,”  Allen said.

The Rhode Island Rams (0-6) got their first run of the game in the top of the second with two outs after Rebel pitcher sophomore Sam Smith allowed three straight singles into the outfield.  On  the third single by Shane O’Connell teammate Kevin Stenhouse was brought around to score.

Smith worked three and one-third innings giving up two runs on five hits.  He struck out three batters and allowed three players to walk.  The Rebels used a total of five pitchers during the game only allowing an additional run to score.  The pitching staff as a whole, struck out six batters and gave up a total of 10 hits.

The Rebels ended their scoring run after the third inning. Ole Miss got single runs in the second and third innings while the Rams scored one run in the fourth and their final run in the seventh inning.

Junior Aaron Greenwood worked a total of three innings, junior Jeremy Massey added an additional one and one-third innings pitching time, senior Tanner Bailey worked one-third of an inning, and senior Brett Huber was brought in to close out the game.

Coach Mike Bianco stated how pleased he was with the offensive and defensive play on championship Sunday.

“They are going to come after you today.  It is going to be one of those grind it out type games.  We just did a few more things offensively and defensively than they did today,”  Bianco said.

The winning pitcher for the Rebels was Greenwood who moved to (2-0) on the season.
While Huber picked up his third save on the year.

The Rebels will return to Swayze Field on Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. hosting the Memphis Tigers.
