Texting and driving now carries a $25 fine if caught by law enforcement officers

Several new laws went into effect today in Mississippi that will impact drivers and those wishing to carry a handgun in public.

Texting and driving is now illegal, and law enforcement officers may now issue a $25 dollar fine to those who are caught emailing, texting or checking social media while behind the wheel. The fine goes up to $100 on July 1, 2016.

State lawmakers have also decided to eliminate the requirement for all car and truck owners to get a $5 inspection sticker. However, vehicles with tinted windows will still be required to get a one-time inspection.

Lawmakers have eliminated the need for a concealed-carry license to have a gun in an enclosed bag. The fee for a new concealed-carry license has been reduced to $80, and the renewal fee for those under age 65 has been reduced to $40. For people over age 65, the renewal fee has dropped to $20.

You need to write an article on Miss University, France Beard, who got 1st Runner-up to Miss Mississippi 2015 this past weekend!

Morgan Burnett, former Ole Miss cheerleader, and now in Occupational Therapy school at the University Medical Center, made Top 10 in the Miss Mississippi pageant as well.
