Oxford Crime Report: Tuesday, June 30

Lieutenant Johnny Poulos has a note for all Mississippi drivers using the highways this weekend:

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin the 2015 Fourth of July Holiday Enforcement Period on Friday, July 3 at 6 p.m. which concludes Sunday, July 5 at midnight. Manpower will increase with the addition of 48 Troopers that have completed their field training program. Due to the fact MHP recorded seven fatalities during the deadly 2014 Fourth of July period, this addition of troopers could not come at a better time.

With the new Texting and Driving Law that is now in place, we are encouraging drivers to change driving habits that could put themselves or other motorists at risk. Our main concern is in what manner the vehicle is being operated, therefore, careless and reckless driving laws will be enforced by MHP. Safety checkpoints will be established to prevent impaired driving, promote seatbelt usage, and to ensure safe operation of motor vehicles by licensed drivers.

We are asking motorists to join with us in making the roadways safer in Mississippi and to help allow families to have a joyous holiday weekend.

Oxford police responded to the following incidents: eight alarms, four disturbances, three ambulance assists, two 911 calls, two welfare concerns, two animal complaints, two improper parking, a public drunk, a careless driving, a petit larceny, an embezzlement, a suspicious person, and a suspicious activity.

Oxford police investigated seven wrecks, issued 30 tickets and made five arrests on the following charges: a felony embezzlement; a shoplifting; an out-of-jurisdiction warrant served; an expired tag with a suspended driver’s license and also for being without a motorcycle endorsement nor a motorcycle helmet; and a careless driving with a suspended driver’s license with no car insurance but with a DUI.

University police responded to the following incidents: four vehicle stops, a moving violation per speeding with possession of controlled substances at University Place, a service call for an ambulance at the Union, a report of a suspicious person at the Ole Miss Inn, a vehicle accident at Farley Hall, and a vehicle accident at Overby Center.

Oxford Fire Department responded to the following calls: a smoke detector activated at 2:54 p.m. by burned food at Canterbury Crest #102, and a smoke detector malfunction at 7:09 p.m. at Lamar Lounge.
