Rebel Netters Conclude Season in NCAA Doubles
The Ole Miss men’s tennis team closed the book on the season Thursday with a tight loss by Nik Scholtz and Zvonimir Babic in the NCAA Doubles Championship to Denver’s Henry Craig and Alex Gasson.
Scholtz and Babic broke and led 4-2 in the first set, before the Denver duo broke back to even the set at 4-4. They would end up going to a tiebreaker, which Denver won 7-6(6) to take the early momentum. They broke Scholtz in the first game of the second set and held the rest of the way for 6-4, to advance to the second round. Scholtz and Babic did have a break point in the final game to get back on serve, but couldn’t convert.
“Nik and Z were not able to convert on the few chances they were given in this match,” head coach Toby Hansson said.
Scholtz finishes the season 16-6 in singles and 12-8 in doubles. The final rankings come out the first week of June, and if he finishes in the top 20 of singles, he would become a four-time All-American. He was ranked No. 18 heading into the postseason.
The future looks bright, as the Rebels will return six players from this year’s lineup next year, including All-SEC honorees Stefan Lindmark and Gustav Hansson.
