Oxford Chargers Go for Mississippi 5A State Crown Tonight
Thursday evening the Oxford Chargers look to claim a second Mississippi title on the diamond in school history on Thursday 10 years after the first.
Oxford (35-1) entered Trustmark Park on Tuesday ready to face the 5A South champions George County, who has some of the top offensive players in their lineup like Tanner Huddleston, who is hitting at a clip of .488 and seven home runs on the season.
Tuesday afternoon, the Chargers starter Houston Roth (9-1) pitched lights out against the Rebels, only giving up one hit in the game, holding George County’s power hitters in check and dropping their team batting average 8 points to .315.
Roth got production from his teammates Grae Kessinger who drove in a run, while Matthew Guyton and Ben Bianco delivered hits that produced runs for the Chargers.
Now Oxford will step back on the diamond against the Rebels for Game 2 with Jason Barber (11-0) getting the ball after a four-day rest. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard locally on 95.5.
