No. 6 Aggies End Rebs Winning Streak with 4-0 Road Win

After a season high five-game winning streak, the Ole Miss baseball team suffered a setback, falling to No. 6 Texas A&M 4-0 in the first game of the final regular season series Thursday. The pitcher’s duel between the Rebels’ Christian Trent and the Aggies’ Grayson Long went on for the first four innings before the Texas A&M (43-9, 18-9 SEC) scored a run in innings five through eight while keeping Ole Miss (29-25, 14-14 SEC) off the scoreboard.

In Trent’s (7-6) final Friday night appearance at Swayze Field for the 2015 campaign, he pitched a total of 6.2 innings, striking out six Aggie batters and allowing three runs on six hits. Relief pitcher Jacob Waguespack entered the game during the sixth and ended the inning. Waguespack tossed 1.1 innings with two hits and one strikeout. Drake Robison went to the rubber for the ninth and retired all three batters he faced for a perfect inning.

Senior Austin Knight and sophomore J.B. Woodman each smacked doubles for the Rebels. Freshman Will Golsan showed his patience at the plate, reaching base three times on walks.

Long (9-0) started for the Aggies and threw seven innings, holding the Rebels to two hits while striking out 12. Relief pitcher Andrew Vinson took the mound in the eighth finished tossing the final two frames. At the dish, Logan Taylor and Nick Banks recorded multi-hit games to pace Texas A&M.

The game started out as a pitcher’s duel with each starter retiring the first nine batters through the first three innings. Trent was outstanding, sending down the first 12 batters he faced to remain perfect through four innings of work. In the bottom half of the inning, Golsan worked the pitch count to be the first batter to reach base, but Long was able to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the fifth inning, the Aggies tallied three hits to get on the board after an RBI double by senior Logan Nottebrok. With runners on second and third, Trent and the Rebels retired the next two batters to keep the Texas A&M lead at 1-0.

Texas A&M struck again in the sixth with a solo home run shot by second baseman Ryne Birk. The homer increased the Aggie lead to 2-0 over the Rebels before adding a run in the seventh.

The Aggies drove in one additional run during the eighth. With Robison on the mound, Ole Miss kept Texas A&M off the board during the ninth, bringing the final score to 4-0.
