Rebels Head to San Diego for NCAA Golf Championships
Ole Miss men’s golf head coach Chris Malloy returned to his alma mater this season to win a national championship. The Rebels took a step toward that goal Monday when Ole Miss received a bid to the 2015 NCAA Golf Championships.
The Rebels are one of 13 teams that will compete at The Farm Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California May 14-16. The University of San Diego will serve as host at the 6, 947 yard, par-72 course, whose notable members include PGA/LPGA major championship winners Annika Sorenstam, Phil Mickelson, Liselotte Neumann and Tom Lehman. Ole Miss is making its ninth NCAA Regional appearance, but the first since 2011.
“I’m very excited for the team to advance to postseason in our first season,” Malloy said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these guys and how they took ownership of the team. It’s a great first step in changing the culture of our program.
“We are excited to be playing in San Diego; it’s a great draw for us. The course is bent-grass greens and as a Bermuda team we will transition well. The guys will certainly love playing out in California and the weather should be great. It doesn’t matter which regional go to, you have to go out and play relaxed golf.”
Joining the Rebels in the regional field is No. 1 seed Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Virginal, Georgia, East Tennessee State, San Diego, Idaho, St. Mary’s, Wichita State and Eastern Kentucky.
Following the conclusion of the NCAA Regionals, 30 teams (top five from each of the six regional sites) will advance to the 2015 NCAA Golf Championship May 29 – June 3 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, hosted by the University of South Florida. The Rebels have advanced to the NCAA Championship round four times, with the last coming in 2001.
