Rebels and Bulldogs Meet For Annual Governor’s Cup Tonight
The Ole Miss Rebel baseball team travels down I-55 to Pearl to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the annual Governor’s Cup at Trustmark Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
Ole Miss (23-22) enters this non-conference tilt with its in-state rival after taking the first two games of the weekend from Alabama. This weekend, the Rebels used the long ball to secure the series over the Crimson Tide as Colby Bortles, Sikes Orvis, J.B. Woodman and Austin Knight all delivered showers in right field.
In the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader Ole Miss shut out Bama 4-0 as Orvis and Knight came up big late in the game with home runs.
Mississippi State (23-21) snapped a six-game losing skid on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Arkansas. The Bulldogs are led at the plate this season by Jacob Robson who is hitting at a .353 clip with 53 hits, 37 runs scored and 8 RBI.
Three other diamond dogs join Robson with a batting average over .300 for the season: Jake Vickerson at .324, Wes Rea at .322 and Cody Brown with a .306 average. MSU is led in home runs by Reid Humphreys with 8 so far this season.
Tonight’s probable pitching matchup faces the Bulldog’s senior southpaw Ross Mitchell while the Rebels send Scott Weathersby to the mound.
Mississippi State holds the all-time series lead with one game at 18-17. Last season, MSU won the game by a score of 8-3.
