Final Brown Bag Lecture: a Skype Regarding Chancellor Dan Jones
The Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies, the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, the U.M. Staff Council, and the U.M. Faculty Senate announced a series of three brown bag discussions on academic freedom, governance, and leadership changes at the University of Mississippi.
On Tuesday, April 28, the final brown bag will take place. The Sarah Isom Center invites faculty, staff, and students to accompany from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Overby Auditorium.
Dr. George M. Cohen, Corporate Law Professor at the University of Virginia, will be Skyping in from UVA to discuss the parallels between the attempted removal of Chancellor Dr. Sullivan by the UVA Board of Trustees and the removal of Chancellor Dan Jones. Amidst uproar from students and faculty, the decision at UVA was ultimately reversed. Dr. Cohen will speak for about 10 minutes through Skype and then participate in a community discussion.
The Sarah Isom Center invites all members of the University of Mississippi community to attend these brown bag conversations. Many have been disheartened by the events of recent weeks and have felt powerless in light of larger outside forces. But the Sarah Isom Center believes that we—faculty, students, and staff—are the University of Mississippi, and we can make our own decisions about the character of our community and the future of our institution.
