Diamond Rebels Head to Auburn for a Three-Game SEC Series
The Ole Miss Rebel baseball team steps back into conference play this weekend as they travel over to the plains of Auburn to take on the Tigers in a three-game series.
Ole Miss enters the weekend with a 19-18 overall record and a mark of 7-8 in SEC play. Last time out on the diamond, the Rebels took care of business against the Skyhawks of UT-Martin by the score of 11-1. Ole Miss hit three home runs in the game, including a grand slam by sophomore Colby Bortles who also connected with a solo shot. Senior Sikes Orvis added a home run to his total on the year pushing it out to five.
Bortles has no cleared the pond with two grand slams in the past three games, including the one that tied the game in the ninth against No. 1 Vanderbilt Friday night.
Auburn comes into the weekend, with a 23-15 record after a doubleheader sweep over Alabama A&M Wednesday. In their last SEC weekend series, the Tigers dropped two of three at LSU to fall to 5-10 at the halfway point of the conference season.
The Tigers are lead at the plate, by sophomore Anfernee Grier is hitting at a .397 clip to rank second in the SEC. He also leads the conference with 62 hits and 19 doubles.
For this three-game slate, the probable pitching matchup looks like this as the Tigers will send Cole Lipscomb and Keegan Thompson to the mound tonight and tomorrow respectively, though Sunday’s hurler is not yet known. Coach Mike Bianco is going to give the the ball to Christian Trent, Brady Bramlett and Will Stokes.
Auburn and Ole Miss have faced off 161 times on the diamond prior to this series with both squads winning eighty games each and one tie. Last time, the Rebels swept the Tigers all three games in 2013.
Game times for this series are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Fans can listen to every pitch on the Ole Miss radio network or watch the games on SECNetwork+.
Ole Miss will return to Swayze field on Tuesday night which starts a five-game homestand.
