After weeks of winter weather moved through the Magnolia State, many motorists have seen an increase in the number of potholes on Mississippi’s highways and interstates. The Mississippi Department of Transportation crews will be out repairing roadways as weather permits.

“Our crews will be working to repair potholes caused by the recent winter weather as quickly as possible,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “The weather is a major factor in how quickly we can complete the necessary repairs.”

Inclement weather, particularly winter weather, has damaging effects on roadways due to freeze/thaw cycles. The first is when water gets into cracks in the road, freezes and then expands. This process enlarges the cracks and causes further damage. The second is when vehicle tires force water into existing cracks or potholes at high velocity and cause further erosion to the pavement and soil underneath the road.

Oxford city crews have also been spotted around town, patching holes that were created or worsened by the big freeze.

MDOT reminds motorists to watch out for our workers in work zones. Be alert while driving through work zones and don’t drive distracted. Also, slow down when approaching those work zones, or when you encounter a pothole. This could save your car, or a life.

“When you see us out on the roadways, remember this is our office,” said McGrath. “Slow down and be respectful of our workplace.”
