The Oxford School District in partnership with the Mississippi Geographic Alliance at the University of Mississippi invite the community to explore the National Geographic’s Giant Traveling Map of Africa, the world’s largest map of Africa, during two special community-wide events Monday, Feb. 23 and Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Children and adults alike can explore the world’s diverse geography on the basketball court-sized map during two community-wide events on Oxford school campuses:

Monday, Feb. 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Oxford Elementary School Gym
1637 Highway 30 E., Oxford

Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Oxford Middle School Gym
222 Bramlett Blvd., Oxford

“During the school days when the map is on our school campuses, Oxford Elementary School and Oxford Middle School students will explore the world’s second largest continent,” said Theresa Bates, Oxford Elementary School gifted teacher. “During the community events, we encourage our school parents, families and the community to stop by and learn by exploring the world’s largest map of Africa.”

The map’s brightly colored, smooth vinyl surface will offer a hands- and feet-on traveling experience through Africa from its deep forests to the Sahara Desert, bringing the geography to life in a meaningful way. The map also has a trunk full of accessories, including interactive activities and props and photo cards to teach participants about the physical characteristics of the continent as well as its rich history, wildlife and cultures.

Participants can bring their iPads to use during the interactive activities. The event is free, and the community is invited to experience a fun night of geography and history.

The Mississippi Geographic Alliance works to strengthen geographic literacy in the state of Mississippi. As part of the nationwide network of state alliances sponsored by the National Geographic Society, MGA uses workshops, online resources and other programs to help educators prepare students to embrace a diverse world, succeed in the global economy and steward the planet’s resources.
