Institute for Energy Law named Garrett Wilkerson, second year law student at University of Mississippi, Hartwick Scholar for this year.

Wilkerson’s paper Rigging Rights of Passage: Analyzing Subsurface Easements in Horizontal Drilling garnered him the $2,500 writing prize.

His paper made an argument for the lawmakers to address issues arising from horizontal drilling. The paper provided a concise survey of solutions suggested by practitioners in resolving subsurface trespassing of properties and liability issues from horizontal drilling.

In addition to the prize Wilkerson will be the Institute for Energy Law’s guest at its 66th annual Oil & Gas Law Conference in Houston, Texas on February 19 and 20. He will also return to Houston on March 27 and 28 to be at its Symposium for Law Schools: Career Paths for Young Attorneys in the Energy Sector at the South Texas College of Law.
