Rho Lambda Sorority Rechartering at OM

After a hiatus of more than two decades, Rho Lambda sorority is planning to return to the Ole Miss campus in a big way.

Rho Lambda, Psi Chapter at The University of Mississippi, began its re-chartering process at Ole Miss last fall. There are currently six members, four from panhellenic and two from national panhellenic.

Member Brittany Mathis, who is a senior member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, explained that the sorority wants to make Rho Lambda as diverse as possible. They hope to accept about 250 new members.

The sorority was originally founded at the University of Miami as a local group back in 1962. By 1974, it received permission from the National Panhellenic Conference to be a national organization.A few years later, on February 14, 1978, it began its 23rd chapter at Ole Miss but went inactive in the early 1980s.

Rho Lambda is a national leadership recognition society that is very competitive to get into. Juniors and seniors have to be asked to apply to join.

Their applications and resumes are sent to headquarters and only 10 percent of the applicants are accepted. Rho Lambda looks for girls with excellent leadership skills and involvement in their own sorority and Greek life as a whole. Perspective members must be high-achieving members of their sorority and will be recognized for their achievements.

Once Rho Lambda inducts new members, they hope to immediately get involved in charity work around campus and Oxford, such as Leap Frog and The Big Event. Inductees will be notified by February 25th, and the induction ceremony for new members will be held on March 26 at 7:30 p.m.
