Della Davidson Playground Project Nearing Goal Date
It’s the season of giving, and a local elementary school is almost to its deadline to raise enough money for a better playground for the children.
The Della Davidson Parent Teacher Organization is fighting to raise money to improve the outdoor spaces for their children, citing the students need a playground, and the current equipment is not sufficient for the increasing number of students in the district. In August 2007, the Della Davidson Elementary School opened its doors to 475 fourth and fifth graders. Seven years later, Della now houses 680 third and fourth graders, and the student population continues to grow.
A study done by Georgia Health Sciences University showed the effects of physical activity on learning not only increased test scores, but also improved a student’s ability to concentrate and work for longer periods of time without interruption. Additional benefits included significantly improved student attendance, and an impressive 67 percent drop in disciplinary problems.
The PTO polled students to find out what they would enjoy having at the school, and here’s some of the items from their wish lists:
- Soccer field
- Swirling slide
- Better swings
- Monkey bars
- Playhouse
- Shade (pavilion, trees), grass, flowers
- Tether Ball
- Foursquare Grid
- Track
- Dodgeball court
- Equipment (balls, frisbees, etc.)
