Chargers Look for 5A State Crown Saturday Night

The Oxford Chargers return to the Mississippi High School state 5A championship game in Starkville Saturday night to meet the Laurel Golden Tornados.
Oxford goes into the game with a 13-1 while the Golden Tornadoes are 12-2 on the year. This game will match up two great class 5A teams.
Laurel has been a very dominant on the playing field and could possibly be a challenge for the Chargers.
“Laurel is a really good football team and they throw the ball exceptionally well,” coach Johnny Hill said. “There quarterback can throw the ball 80-yards, with two outstanding receivers that are big and strong and go up and get it.”
That is new wrinkle that the Chargers will have to prepare for because most people that Oxford faces doesn’t throw the ball near as much and Hill said they have not seen a QB that thrown that hard. The Charger defense will have to be prepared in the back field not to give up to a cheap touchdown.
Oxford’s defense has been very dominant this season, allowing its offense to go for it deep in its own or do a onside kick or a fake punt.
Last season, the Charges dropped only their lone game in the state championship game. With the same group of players back on the team this year, everyone wanted to get back to the championship game.
With the leadership of the team that felt the defeat of losing at the last minute last season, the team had a lot to play for to get back to this point. After winning the northern division last Friday the celebration was not as big as it was a season ago since the job is not down.
The leadership the team has formed being in this place last year excepted to play again for another title.
This evening, a pep rally will take place on the the square to pump up the Chargers onto a chance to win. The pep rally will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The state championship games will be played this weekend in Starkville at Davis Wade Stadium after moving from bad conditions in Jackson, which will be good for all the players and coaches to use the facilities at State and Ole Miss.
