Chucky Mullins Sign Goes Missing After Egg Bowl
A temporary dedication marker on Chucky Mullins Drive explaining the importance of the former Ole Miss athlete went missing Saturday night after the Egg Bowl.
The sign, which was installed at Chucky Mullins and Poole drives in September, was a temporary placeholder for a more sturdy version. University Police Chief Calvin Sellers said the sign will soon be replaced with the new version.
“It was a temporary sign and wasn’t very substantial,” Sellers said. “When the new one comes in, it will be more substantial.”
Sellers said someone tried to steal another marker on campus the same night — the sign honoring the 2008 presidential debate by the Ford Center on University Avenue. However, the sign was a heavier, cast iron sign, and he said someone was able to get it off the post, but it was too heavy to carry away so it was abandoned.
Mullins played football at Ole Miss and died in 1991 after complications from an injury suffered during a Rebel homecoming football game in 1989.
Sellers said they have no leads on the missing sign but asks anyone who has seen or heard anything to contact CrimeStoppers at (662) 234-8477.
