What to do on a Bye Weekend in Oxford

Published

on

From August to late November, Oxford is a busy town bustling with activity. Football season brings thousands of people to the town and with them comes a packed town.
For the first time since Sept. 20, the Ole Miss Rebels have a weekend off from the hustle and bustle of football season. Oxford will go back to its normal routine, and people will be wondering, “What do we do without tailgating and football?”
Our advice is to enjoy the peace and quiet that will be surrounding Oxford this weekend, and to take advantage of the following opportunities:
Friday
David DiBenedetto will be signing copies of his book “Good Dog: True Stories of Love, Loss, and Loyalty” at 5 pm at Square Books. It’s a collection of stories about ownership, companionship, and loyalty.
At 7:30 p.m., the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors will be hosting a FREE concert at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
IMG_6628“The Mystery of Edwin Drood” also will begin across campus at 7:30 p.m. at Fulton Chapel. Based on Charles Dicken’s final novel, the show allows interaction from the audience because the novel was never finished. Audience members vote on the outcome of this murder mystery musical with more than 400 possible endings.
Beginning at 9 p.m., the Lone Bellow, Foreign Fields and Kristin Diable will be performing at Proud Larry’s.
Saturday, Sunday
gospel choirThe UM Gospel Choir Music Festival will be performing at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Spirit Sounds: Forty Years of Celebration will highlight the last 40 years of success for the Grammy-nominated choir. Admission is $10 and all are invited to attend. For tickets, call (662) 915-7411.
“The Mystery of Edwin Drood” will perform again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and 2 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Chapel. This gives fans another chance to see this funny performance. Don’t miss out on the last chance to see the show!
All Weekend
Be adventurous and take a trip to Sardis Lake.
Try a new restaurant while Oxford is not packed with people. This is your chance to experience that restaurant you’ve been hearing so much about but haven’t had the chance to try yet. Fins, Gus’s Fried Chicken and the Wine Bar are all new spots on the Square that will be less crowded than usual this weekend.
On game weekends, the bars are so packed you can barely move. Go out to the square and enjoy an atmosphere that is more relaxed this weekend. Oxford has an incredible amount of history and is waiting to be seen by YOU. Take a visit to Rowan Oak, the L.Q.C. Lamar House, Cedar Oaks, or the Walton- Young Historic House.

Thanks for mentioning the Good Dog event at Square Books on Friday. Dave DiBenedetto is the editor of Garden & Gun, publisher of the book with Harper, and seven contributors to this book, including its editor, Donna Levine, live in the Oxford area, and will also be signing books. It will be fun!
