Two Powerful, Proud Alums Speak to Ole Miss Students
What does the Nuremberg Trials, the Mississippi real estate advisory board, the father of public relations and the market economy all have in common? Two very influential and powerful Ole Miss alum.
One started his work as a radio reporter for the Nuremberg Trial. One has built up his real estate strategies with his personal branding experiences throughout large cities and small towns. Both are well-known in their respective fields and both are steadfast and proud alumni of the University of Mississippi.
On Monday, Harold Burson, well-known for his work in the field of public relations, and Blake Tartt, well-known for his work in real estate and the expansion of many companies, took out time from their afternoon to come and speak to Ole Miss students at the Jackson Avenue Center.
Dr. Robert Magee, a graduate professor of Integrated Marketing Communications, invited the two alum to speak to students in a panel-like fashion and both were eager to answer all questions students threw at them.
A 1940 graduate from Ole Miss, Burson proudly recounted his memories of Normandy as well as his time as a media reporter for the Nuremberg Trials. He also recounts his assistance in rebranding the image of Ole Miss as a university. He recalled the issue of diversity on the University of Mississippi’s campus and how he was able to pull together with the chancellor to rid racial tensions and encourage more student and athlete recruitments from across the country and the globe. He encouraged students that if they wanted to be successful, they need only “talk the talk, and walk the walk.”
Tartt was quick to relay to all how lucky he felt to have been apart of the beautiful University of Mississippi, and feels that he owes much of his success to his links to his beloved alma mater. “No one dislikes Ole Miss, and everyone wants to know more about its true mystique.” A 1984 graduate of Ole Miss, Tartt has been successful in not only expanding his own personal brand, but also for bringing many companies to the city of Oxford, including Pure Ryde, Starbucks, and Mattress Firm. He resides with the advice that “you should always be very curious, and of course, knowledge is power.”
Both are true inspirations and the University of Mississippi is glad to have two of its dedicated alum back at home.
