Live and Dangerous: Oxford Weekend Music Preview
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2
Marc & Elijah Ford Holy Ghost Tour w/CBDB — Proud Larry’s
Elijah Ford is a California native turned Austin based musician who began his solo career after breaking from touring with Oscar & Grammy winner Ryan Bingham. Ford put out his first solo record Upon Waking in 2011 and his EP Ashes in October of 2012. Elijah and his band The Bloom are currently preparing their new full length, recorded at Austin’s own Arlyn Studios, for release in 2014.
No stranger to the industry, Ford is the son of former Black Crowes’ guitar heavyweight Marc Ford, and toured as part of Ford Sr’s Fuzz Machine at the age of 17 before getting the gig with Bingham, where he stayed until 2012. The younger Ford has surely taken some valuable rock n’ roll notes from his father, but has also put together a pop rock vibe that’s completely his own.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3
George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners — Proud Larry’s
George Porter Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60’s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.
Rocket 88 — Blind Pig
Rocket 88 was formed in the summer of 2005 and has since brought its Mississippi-soaked sound to venues all over the South. Their current touring schedule is more exclusive due to family and other obligations with most shows close to home but the band does still perform at select venues.
The Captain Midnight Band — Soulshine Pizza
The king of “waterbed rock ‘n’ roll” zooms back to Oxford for two nights of ribaldry on the Soulshine stage. The good Captain promises two sets per night of his cosmic hopscotching brand of PG-13 odes.
