Rebels Fall to College of Charleston 2-0
The Ole Miss bats couldn’t get on track Sunday afternoon against the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., and the Rebel softball team fell 2-0 to the home-standing Cougars to close out play at the College of Charleston Classic.
Junior third baseman Allison Brown continued her strong play at the tournament with a single, but Ole Miss couldn’t find the right spots against Cougars pitcher Hope Klicker, and dropped the final game of the three-day event. Brown batted a team-high .563 (9-16) at the tournament with six runs and four RBI. Senior first baseman Londen Ladner drove in a team-high nine RBI throughout the five games of the tournament.
In the circle, senior Shelby Jo Fenter threw 11.0 innings in two games in Charleston (1-1), accumulating 11 strikeouts and a 0.64 ERA, with just one earned run allowed, which came Sunday.
Ole Miss (4-6) had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the third. With one out away, junior Jamie Morgan reached base on a College of Charleston throwing error, and advanced to second on the errant throw. Morgan later would advance to third base on a sacrifice bunt by senior RT Cantillo, but the Rebels couldn’t bring her home from there.
College of Charleston (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom-half of the inning with a single to left-center field with the bases loaded.
The Cougars scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead.
Ole Miss will play again Tuesday in a doubleheader against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Rebels and Golden Eagles split last year’s doubleheader in Oxford, Miss.
