OXFORD, Miss. — When Tre Harris makes another catch of a Jaxson Dart pass for the Ole Miss offense, Antwane “Juice” Wells is fine with that.
Besides, he’s scored just as many touchdowns.
“As a whole, we eat as an offense,” Wells said at the Rebels press conferences Monday. “That doesn’t bother me. I just want to do my role, and when my time comes, I’ll be ready.”
Through the first four games he’s got 14 catches for 274 yards. Wells is averaging 19.6 yards per catch to Harris’ 16.5, so Dart is looking for him. It’s really a trio of quality receivers because let’s not forget Cayden Lee, who has 14 catches, too.
“This offense is explosive and fast,” Wells said. “We want to get up on teams as fast as we can. I had a false start on a play, it just shows how fast we’re moving. I have to do a little better at lining up faster, but I’d definitely describe us as explosive and fast.”
Considering the way Ole Miss is putting up early points, everybody has adopted that philosophy. Averaging nearly 20 points a game in the first quarter alone proves the getting off the blocks quickly is something the entire teams has embraced.
Now that Ole Miss has all that solved, they are working on the finer points. Postgame film sessions are probably an agonizing experience of pointing out the finder points they can improve. It will be needed in SEC play.
“Even last week we didn’t play to our full potential,” Wells said. “We didn’t get a touchdown in the red zone, convert on a drive, little stuff like that can prepare an offense for what’s to come. Even in the Wake Forest week, we didn’t play like we should perform. We got a little glimpse of adversity, but I feel like we’ll bounce back from anything that’s thrown our way.”
Now that SEC play starts. The Rebels will kickoff against Kentucky at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday morning. The game will be televised on ABC.
