Learning new salsa moves—or showing them off—is the perfect excuse to take a weekend break and join in on Latin Party fun. The party, hosted by The Lyric, is tonight from 9 to 11 p.m.
The unique party will feature traditional music and dancing, said Jose Torrado, a member of the Latin American Students Organization (LASO).
Though the event is not organized by LASO, the organization strives to provide a comfortable social atmosphere for students at the University of Mississippi with an emphasis on Latin American cultural celebration.
“Dancing and partying have the power to bring people from different backgrounds together,” Torrado said.
The night will feature Latin music genres such as salsa, reggeaton, bachata and meregue.
“Everyone has a great time and we just want that to keep going,” Torrado said.
He said he and his friends like bringing a Latin atmosphere to the Square for people of all backgrounds to enjoy.
Imdadul Haque, a Bangladeshi Ph.D. student, who went to the Latin Party last year, said he plans to be at Friday’s party. He made sure to invite other Bangladeshi friends this time, too.
“It was very enjoyable. Apart from music, the gathering was fantastic and the refreshment was awesome. It’s a great way to relax amidst the pressure from studies,” he said.
Latin Party is also a great way to become more familiar with the Latino culture.
Sijan Sherstha, a computer science major from Nepal, said as an international student it’s hard to get acquainted with people from other cultures.
“Latin Party is a good platform where you can mix up with other cultures easily,” he said. “There is music (and) dance, which is really needed to overcome the anxiety.”
The entry fee for the party is $10, and attendees can enjoy a $4 margarita special.
