Funeral services for a local sound man who died last week when the tour bus he was traveling in overturned in California have been set for Tuesday in Oxford.

David Joe Turner, 64, of Oxford has traveled with county music star Josh Turner for more than 12 years as the musician’s audio engineer. On Sept. 18, Turner was killed when the driver of the bus carrying the sound crew went off the road and into an embankment after a show at the Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles.

The crew was traveling to Washington for a concert scheduled for Thursday.

The two men share the same last name but are not related.

The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 with the Rev. Cliff Smiley and George Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held in West Hall at Waller Funeral Home starting at noon on Tuesday.

Born in Bruce to the late Eceil Gerry and Mary Louise McKibben Turner, he had been in the music industry most of his life working with various country music stars. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Armstrong.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie Henderson Turner of Oxford; daughter, Ada Turner Byrd and her husband, Scott of Tupelo; sister, Anne Baggett and her husband, Donald of Fulton; brother, Richard Turner and his wife, Bonita of Hattiesburg; three grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Hannah all of Tupelo.

Memorial contributions in Turner’s memory may be made to Make-A-Wish America Gift Processing, 1702 East Highland Ave., Suite 400, Phoenix, AZ 85016.
