An Oxford man was killed Wednesday night when country music singer Josh Turner’s crew bus crashed in California.
David Turner, 64, has been traveling with Josh Turner for more than 12 years as a member of the musician’s sound crew. While they have the same last name, the two men are not related.
According to national news reports, the bus was traveling on Highway 46 in San Luis Obispo County in California after a show at the Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles when the driver lost control of the bus for unknown reasons. The bus went off the road and landed in an embankment. Turner and another passenger were thrown from the bus. Emergency crews say the driver was extracted and transported to Cottage Hospital in Fresno by air.
The crew was traveling to Washington for a concert scheduled for Thursday.
David Turner worked in the country music industry for 40 years. He played and worked stage crew for Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams Jr., Conway Twitty, Patty Loveless and others.
He was born and raised in Bruce. He majored in music at the University of Mississippi and enjoyed playing the guitar. He leaves behind his wife, Jamie Henderson of Oxford, one daughter, Ada Elizabeth Byrd, and two grandsons.
