Ole Miss SAAC to Hold Hurricane Dorian Supply Drive

Published

on

The Ole Miss Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be sponsoring a supply drive this Friday for those affected by Hurricane Dorian, which last week left a trail of destruction in The Bahamas and elsewhere along the east coast of the United States.

Ole Miss men’s basketball redshirt freshman Franco Miller Jr., a native of Freeport, Bahamas, helped organize the supply drive in conjunction with SAAC in order to help assist his home country. Miller is one of four Bahamians within Ole Miss Athletics at the moment, with his teammate Sammy Hunter (Nassau), women’s basketball junior Valerie Nesbitt (Nassau) and women’s basketball head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin, who is also a native of Freeport.

“Seeing somewhere you grew up getting washed away, like your entire high school, is devastating and made me want to help anyway I could since I’m so far away,” Miller said. “You never know when tragedy will strike, but you can control how you respond to others in need. Since coming to Oxford and experiencing an injury, Rebel Nation has always been there for me and supported me. A lot of people have already been reaching out to me asking how they can help, and I decided this would be the most impactful way for the Oxford community to help out my hometown.”

The supply drive will take place Friday from 4-7 p.m. CT at Gate 24 of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and The Pavilion Plaza.
